William J. Carroll, MD, FACP Appointed Section Chief of Palliative Care and Extensivist Medicine

The UCLA Department of Medicine (DoM) is pleased to announce the appointment of William J. Carroll, MD, FACPas section chief of the UCLA DoM Palliative Care and Extensivist Medicine Programs. He will assume the role on April 1.

“I am humbled and honored to step into this role,” Dr. Carroll said. “The work of this section has already created a strong foundation of clinical excellence, innovation and teamwork, and I look forward to helping build on this momentum.”

Dr. Carroll is an assistant professor and primary care physician who is renowned for his expertise on care delivery for individuals who do not achieve optimal health outcomes within traditional health care infrastructure. He currently serves as associate director of the UCLA Extensivist Medicine Program, medical director of UCLA Health Senior Care, and clinical medical director for the UCLA Health Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Program. As medical director of UCLA Health Anti-coagulation Management Services Clinic, he developed the transition of its anticoagulation management service clinic to a pharmacy-led program. He also led the UCLA Health Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Program alongside David B. Reuben, MD, as it transitioned to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Program’s GUIDE Model, an improved dementia experience alternative payment model. The program has enrolled the largest number of GUIDE participant patients nationwide.

Beyond UCLA, Dr. Carroll serves as an American College of Physicians (ACP) Wellbeing Champion and is a member of the ACP Health and Public Policy Committee. He is also a specialty delegation member within the California Medical Association (CMA), one of four members who represent internal medicine interests.

Dr. Carroll completed his internship and residency, including a chief resident year, at Stony Brook University Hospital. He earned his medical degree from St. George’s School of Medicine.
