Sarah M. Jensen, MD & Michael F. Ayoub, MD Appointed Associate Program Directors for the UCLA Internal Medicine Residency Program
We are pleased to announce the appointments of Sarah M. Jensen, MD and Michael F. Ayoub, MD as associate program directors (APDs) for the UCLA Internal Medicine Residency Program.
The associate program director plays a key leadership role in advancing the residency program's educational mission. In partnership with residency leadership, APDs help develop and enhance the curriculum, mentor and support residents and drive continuous program improvement. Through these efforts, they help ensure the delivery of exceptional medical education and foster resident success.
Sarah Jensen, MD
Dr. Sarah Jensen is an attending physician in hospice and palliative medicine at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center. She works closely with residents on inpatient consult services and is a dedicated educator who lectures extensively on palliative and end-of-life care.
A graduate of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Dr. Jensen completed her internal medicine residency, chief residency and hospice and palliative medicine fellowship at UCLA. Before pursuing medicine, she studied chemistry at Northeastern University and worked as a biochemist at a drug discovery startup in the Boston area.

Since joining the faculty, Dr. Jensen has demonstrated a deep commitment to trainee education and well-being. She developed innovative medical intensive care unit (MICU) debriefing sessions and now oversees both the MICU and solid oncology debriefing programs at UCLA Santa Monica. She is also leading efforts to enhance LGBTQ+ education within palliative care and has academic interests in communication skills training, learner support and reflective practice. In her new role, Dr. Jensen looks forward to expanding educational programming focused on difficult conversations, physician well-being, life beyond training and fellowship preparation.
Michael Ayoub, MD
Dr. Michael Ayoub is a hospitalist who provides care at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center and the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center. A Southern California native, he completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard University before returning to UCLA for medical school, internal medicine residency and chief residency.
Since joining the UCLA hospitalist faculty in 2018, Dr. Ayoub has become a respected educator and mentor. He serves as clinical co-director for the Reagan/Santa Monica cohort within the UCLA Section of Hospital Medicine and has played a key role in faculty development initiatives. He also founded and continues to direct the Hospitalist Career Mentorship Series, providing guidance and support to residents pursuing careers in hospital medicine.

Dr. Ayoub's educational interests include direct observation, feedback, clinical coaching and career mentorship. He is widely recognized for his thoughtful teaching, practical approach to clinical education and commitment to outstanding patient care. As associate program director, he looks forward to advancing best practices in inpatient teaching and resident development.
