We are pleased to announce the appointment of Manuel Celedon, MD, as the inaugural chief of the Division of Addiction Medicine within the Department of Medicine at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. This newly established division reflects a commitment to integrating addiction treatment into comprehensive medical care for veterans.

A faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System since 2016, Dr. Celedon served as assistant chief of emergency medicine from 2020 to 2024 and currently serves as deputy director of the National Tele-Pain Addiction Center (TPAC). His work with TPAC acknowledges the complex relationship between pain and addiction and builds systems that are responsive to this clinical reality. Dr. Celedon has also served as co-principal investigator on VA grants to develop proactive addiction outreach and opioid safety programs.

As chief of the Division of Addiction Medicine, Dr. Celedon will initially focus on establishing an inpatient addiction consult service while developing a dedicated rotation for internal medicine residents, palliative care fellows, addiction medicine fellows and addiction psychiatry fellows. His longer-term vision is to collaborate with other hospital services to embed addiction care into routine care for hospitalized patients. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that patients’ addiction-related needs are addressed alongside their other medical needs.

Dr. Celedon earned his medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
