Raphael J. Landovitz, MD, MSc Appointed Chief of the UCLA Division of Infectious Diseases and DoM Associate Vice Chair for Clinical Research
The UCLA Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Raphael J. Landovitz, MD, MSc has been appointed chief of the division of infectious diseases and associate vice chair for clinical research for the department of medicine, effective March 1.
“It is a tremendous honor to have the opportunity to lead the UCLA Division of Infectious Diseases, and I look forward to collaborating with department of medicine leadership and colleagues across divisional and departmental lines to advance the science and clinical care to fight current and emerging infectious diseases,” Dr. Landovitz said.
In his role as chief, Dr. Landovitz will implement the department’s strategic plan within the division of infectious diseases through its education, clinical and research initiatives. He will also collaborate with department and health system leaders to further elevate the division’s national profile.
As associate vice chair for clinical research — a new role focused on building the infrastructure for clinical trials within the DoM — Dr. Landovitz will draw from his extensive history of leadership roles in major clinical trial networks for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). He currently serves as the incoming multiple principal investigator of the NIAID-funded global HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) and multiple principal investigator of the UCLA AIDS Prevention and Treatment Clinical Trials Unit.

“I am very excited to work with department leadership to expand clinical trials infrastructure to allow broad participation in development and testing of novel therapeutics across clinical domains, providing cutting edge research participation options to the patients of UCLA Health, and providing the opportunity for department faculty to engage in clinical investigation with robust support,” Dr. Landovitz said.
Dr. Landovitz is a professor of medicine and currently serves as the interim chief of the division of infectious diseases, as director of the UCLA Clinical AIDS Research and Education (CARE) Center, and as co-director of the National Institute of Mental Health-funded UCLA Center for HIV Identification Prevention and Treatment Services (CHIPTS). As a physician-scientist, his research centers on optimizing the use of antiretroviral medication for HIV treatment and prevention. He is also a consultant to the World Health Organization on global HIV testing algorithm development, serves on the Scientific Leadership Board of the International Antiviral Society USA and is a member of the editorial board of the academic journal AIDS. Dr. Landovitz has won several awards for his research and clinical work, including the 2017 HIV Medical Association Research Award, the 2023 Ward Cates Award from the HPTN, and the 2023 Donna Davis Community Award from Advancing Clinical Therapeutics Globally. He has held sustained National Institutes of Health funding for his research on HIV prevention since 2009.
Dr. Landovitz joined the UCLA faculty in 2006, following work with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to implement a global HIV/AIDS program called President’s Emergency Plans for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). From 2002 to 2005 he served as a faculty member of the infectious diseases division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He completed his fellowship in infectious diseases through the Brigham and Women’s/Massachusetts General Hospital program and his residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He attended Harvard University for medical school and holds a B.A. in chemistry from Princeton. He obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Research at UCLA.
We extend our gratitude to members of the search committee who led the efforts to identify the best candidate for this leadership role. Please join the department in congratulating Dr. Landovitz on his new appointments. We look forward to his continued leadership in our mission to lead in innovation, transform care and advance health for all.
