Arun S. Karlamangla, MD, PhD Appointed Chief of the UCLA Division of Geriatrics
The UCLA Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Arun S. Karlamangla, MD, PhDhas been appointed chief of the UCLA Division of Geriatrics, effective October 1, 2024.
A practicing geriatrician and clinical researcher, Dr. Karlamangla studies the epidemiology of age-related health conditions and functional decline, as well as their midlife- and menopause-related antecedents. He also investigates the physiological pathways by which social determinants of health impact successful aging. Dr. Karlamangla has served as a reviewer for the NIH, as a member of three study sections and several ad hoc panels. He has played a range of key roles for the national aging cohort studies "Midlife in the United States" and "Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation," including statistician, co-investigator, analysis core lead, project lead, and multi-principal investigator.
Prior to medical school, Dr. Karlamangla earned a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California and worked for several years as an assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, he came to UCLA for residency in internal medicine followed by a clinical fellowship in geriatrics. He has taught graduate courses on statistics both to engineering graduate students at the University of Illinois and clinical research students at UCLA, earning teaching awards at both institutions. He maintains a faculty practice at UCLA Health sites in Westwood and Westlake Village.
In his new role, Dr. Karlamangla aims to grow the research arm of the division into the largest geriatrics research unit in the nation. He is looking forward to continuing the division’s tradition of excellence in its geriatrics fellowship program and to maintaining its strong clinical presence in the UCLA Health system.As we welcome Dr. Karlamangla, we would also like to express our deep gratitude to outgoing Division Chief David Reuben, MD for three decades of service to the UCLA Department of Medicine. Dr. Reuben’s leadership elevated the geriatrics division to national prominence and leadership in innovation in Alzheimer’s and dementia care. His commitment to providing high-quality medical care has enriched the lives of thousands of patients and their families. His impact on the field of geriatrics and on the department will be felt for generations to come.
