E. Dale Abel, MD, PhD Elected A Fellow of Royal College of Physicians
E. Dale Abel, MD, PhD, William S. Adams Distinguished Professor and Chair for the Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Executive Medical Director at UCLA Health, has been elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP Edin).
“Appointment as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians is an honor that I will cherish. I am grateful for those who have mentored me over the years and provided opportunities for me to contribute to our profession in various ways. It is also gratifying that mission of the college “to improve and maintain the quality of patient care by setting the highest standards for medical practice” aligns with the core values of the UCLA Department of Medicine and UCLA Health,” said Dr. Abel.
The prestigious honor recognizes Dr. Abel’s outstanding contributions to medicine, his leadership in the field of endocrinology, and his long-standing commitment to advancing patient care, education, and research. Election to fellowship is awarded by peer nomination and reflects international recognition of excellence and impact within the medical profession.
Dr. Abel has had a distinguished career in endocrine and metabolic research. His pioneering work on glucose transport and mitochondrial metabolism in the heart has defined current understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular complications of diabetes. His laboratory has generated important insights into the roles of mitochondrial dysfunction and aberrant insulin signaling in increasing the risk of heart failure in patients with diabetes.

Dr. Abel’s research program has been continually funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1995, by the American Heart Association and recently by the European Research Council. Dr. Abel is the recipient of numerous awards for scholarship, mentorship, and endowed lectureships such as the Fred Conrad Koch Lifetime Achievement Award of the Endocrine Society, and the 2018 African American Museum of Iowa History Makers Award.
He is an elected member of several of the nation’s most prestigious professional societies, including the American Association of Physicians (AAP), the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), the American Clinical and Climatological Association (ACCA), the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). He is past President of the Endocrine Society and the Association of Professors of Medicine. In 2026, he was awarded the Dr. Robert H. Williams, Distinguished Chair of Medicine Award from the Association of Professors of Medicine (APM).

Fellowship represents international recognition of a physician’s impact and standing within the field.
