Arielle E. Sommer, MD, FACP Appointed Regional Ambulatory Medical Director, South Region and Associate Clinical Chief of the UCLA Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research
The UCLA Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Arielle E. Sommer, MD has been appointed regional ambulatory medical director, South region and associate clinical chief of the UCLA Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research.
Dr. Sommer joined UCLA as a primary care faculty member in 2017 and like many new doctors, her panel rapidly expanded. This presented significant challenges in balancing patient care while simultaneously learning a new medical system and reaching a work-life balance. These challenges motivated her to seek a leadership role in the DMPG Physician Onboarding Program and the DoM Professional Education Committee.
Her goal was to mentor new physicians through the transition process so they can better achieve their professional goals, while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Dr. Sommer also serves on the DoM Well-Being Committee, the DMPG Executive Board, and as an Educator for Excellence in the David Geffen School of Medicine. Until recently, she regularly precepted internal medicine residents, but continues to serve in mentorship roles for trainees. Central to her leadership and clinical roles is her passion for mentorship, her love of the practice of medicine, and her hopes of revitalizing physicians’ joy and satisfaction with their professional and personal lives.
In 2023, Dr. Sommer moved to the South Bay where she works in the Torrance Lomita office. She is thrilled to serve as Regional Ambulatory Medical Director where she will continue to engage her passions for physician well-being, teamwork, workplace efficiency and LEADERShip. She is honored to work with such incredible physicians, researchers, and educators and to support her colleagues as they pursue their professional and personal aspirations. In addition, Dr. Sommer is committed to strengthening UCLA’s core value of diversity, equity and inclusion not only as it pertains to patients, but as it relates to providers, staff, and to all members of UCLA’s family as we expand in the South Bay.
Dr. Sommer grew up in the San Gabriel Valley after moving from Minnesota as a child. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Southern California where she also obtained her medical degree. She then completed her internal medicine residency at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, where she completed certificate trainings in women’s health and quality and safety improvement.
On a personal note, Dr. Sommer just welcomed her first child in March and will be transitioning to her married name, Bilek (“Bee-lack”) in the coming months. When she is not working, she enjoys running, hiking, garage-sale shopping, and exploring the beautiful South Bay with her husband, daughter, and dog.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Sommer who will assume this leadership role starting August 14th upon her return from maternity leave.
