Manuel A. Eskildsen, MD Appointed Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care at VA Greater Los Angeles
The UCLA Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Manuel A. Eskildsen, MD, MPH, CMD as the associate chief of staff for geriatrics and extended care at VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VA GLA).
Dr. Eskildsen is a health sciences clinical professor in the Division of Geriatrics at UCLA. He is a board-certified geriatrician and clinician educator, with extensive experience in education and long-term care leadership. He completed his internal medicine residency training at the Cambridge Health Alliance and Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, MA. He pursued a fellowship in geriatric medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Harvard Division on Aging in Boston, MA. After finishing his training, he practiced at the Cambridge Health Alliance, and then the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. As a clinician educator at Emory, he was a member of its Academy of Medical Educators and was awarded the title of Junior Clinical Teacher of the Year by the American Geriatrics Society in 2013. He also led Emory’s geriatric medicine fellowship training program from 2013 to 2015. In 2015, he was also elected chair of the American Geriatrics Society Teachers Section.
In the Division of Geriatrics at UCLA, he has been part of the skilled nursing facility practice group, caring for patients at affiliated facilities in Santa Monica, as well as in the inpatient setting. Since 2018, he has been the physician lead for skilled nursing facility care within the UCLA Faculty Practice Group and has served as the associate chief for post-acute and long-term care within the division of geriatrics. He has also served as medical director at two nursing facilities in Santa Monica: the Brentwood Health Care Center, and the Berkley West Convalescent Hospital.
At the VA GLA, Dr. Eskildsen will lead its geriatrics and extended care programs, including oversight of the Community Living Centers at West LA and Sepulveda, the home-based primary care programs, and community nursing home care, among others. He will also help oversee the VA’s efforts in geriatrics education and training.
