Zhaoping Li, MD, PhD Appointed Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine at VA Greater Los Angeles

Dr. Zhaoping Li, professor in residence of medicine, Lynda & Stewart Resnick Endowed Chair in Human Nutrition, and chief of the division of clinical nutrition has been appointed as interim chair of the Department of Medicine at VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VA GLA). She will also be appointed as executive vice chair for veterans affairs in the Department of Medicine at UCLA Health. Dr. Li has had a a range of roles at VA GLA, including director of the emergency department, chief of the hospitalist division, and for the past four years serving as the deputy chief of the medical service.

She is a distinguished clinician, educator and researcher, with an active translational research program in nutrition, that includes current National Institute of Health (NIH), Veterans Affairs (VA), U.S. Department of Defense, and industry grant support. Dr. Li has been a principal investigator for over 100 clinical trials and published over 200 peer reviewed scientific papers. The VA contributes almost 40% of the UCLA Department of Medicine core internal medicine and subspecialty fellowship positions and hosts a track of the primary care medicine training program. The VA division of the DoM oversees over 300 faculty academic dossiers and has a non-VA federal grant portfolio of over 30 million dollars. In addition, VA-based faculty receive over 10 million dollars in annual VA research and quality program support. Over 45 physician scientist faculty in the DOM have been recruited to joint VA-UCLA positions in the past eight years. VA faculty have been consistently recognized for outstanding teaching in the core internal medicine program, subspecialty fellowships, and by UCLA medical students for teaching in both the preclinical years as well as over 125 third and fourth year students that come for clinical rotations at the VA each year.
