Shahram Shafi, MD Appiointed Central Coast Regional Ambulatory Medical Director and Associate Clinical Chief of the UCLA Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research

The UCLA Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Shahram Shafi, MD as regional ambulatory medical director for the Central Coast and associate clinical chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research (GIMHSR) effective Feb. 24.

“My vision is to provide the highest quality patient-centered care while expanding access to healthcare in the Central Coast region of California,” Dr. Shafi said. “I am committed to fostering a multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes preventative care, chronic disease management, and evidence-based medicine to improve patient outcomes.” 

As regional ambulatory medical director, Dr. Shafi will prioritize ensuring that patients in Central Coast communities have timely access to comprehensive primary care and multi-specialty services. He will play a key role in supporting the growth and expansion of the region through strategic recruitment, the development of innovative clinical programs, and the strengthening of partnerships within UCLA Health and the broader medical and academic community. In collaboration with clinical chiefs, he will champion the growth of medical specialties, ensuring patients have access to a diverse and comprehensive spectrum of services tailored to meet their evolving healthcare needs.

He looks forward to mentoring and supporting physicians and to working closely with clinical operations to streamline workflows, enhance efficiency and improve patient access to high-quality care.

Dr. Shafi has served as the lead physician in the Goleta office since its opening. Dr. Shafi completed his internal medicine residency training at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens, New York, where he served as chief resident. He attended medical school at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, an experience that broadened his perspective on global health and strengthened his passion for medicine. Beyond medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters, cooking, playing ice hockey, working out and exploring the great outdoors.

As we welcome Dr. Shafi into his new role, the department would also like to thank Regional Ambulatory Medical Director Adam Cavallero, MD for his service to Central Coast communities. Dr. Cavallero was instrumental to UCLA Health’s expansion into the Central Coast, and we are grateful to him for his leadership. Dr. Cavallero will continue serving as the Regional Ambulatory Medical Director for the North West Valley, bringing his invaluable expertise in driving successful regional growth and ambulatory expansion to West Hills. As UCLA Health's ambulatory network expands alongside the recent inpatient growth at UCLA West Valley Hospital, his leadership will play a pivotal role in ensuring seamless development and enhanced patient care.
