In Memoriam: Theodore “Ted” Hahn, MD

Dear colleagues,

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Theodore “Ted” Hahn, MD, professor of medicine in the divisions of endocrinology and geriatrics in the UCLA Department of Medicine. Dr. Hahn passed away on February 16, 2026, his 86th birthday, following a prolonged illness that began after a COVID‑19 infection.

Dr. Hahn was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1940 to Odessa Milford Hahn and Theodore Hahn. He earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, where he rowed on the varsity crew team, and went on to receive his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University. He completed fellowship training in endocrinology and bone biology. During this time, he met his laboratory partner and future wife, Bevra Hahn, MD, professor of medicine in the UCLA Division of Rheumatology.

In 1983, Dr. Hahn was recruited to the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and UCLA, where he built an outstanding career as a physician‑scientist, medical educator, and leader. He served as chair of geriatrics at the West LA VA and led a highly productive laboratory that advanced the field of bone biology. Working alongside colleagues, fellows, and students, he contributed to the development of novel therapeutic approaches for osteoporosis, including multiple patent applications.

Theodore "Ted" Hahn, MD

Dr. Hahn’s research was continuously funded, and he was widely recognized as an award‑winning clinician‑scientist and a deeply respected teacher and mentor. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

Funeral services will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills on Saturday, March 28, beginning at 10:30 am. Colleagues and friends are welcome to visit at any point during the day.
