Richard Cheng, MD Appointed Associate Director of Interventional Cardiology
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Richard Cheng, MD as the new associate director of interventional cardiology (IC) in the UCLA Department of Medicine Division of Cardiology. In this capacity, Dr. Cheng will provide strategic, clinical and academic leadership for the IC section, working closely with the director of IC on system-wide initiatives. He will lead the expansion of specialty programs – including valvular and structural interventions – and streamline the referral pathway while supporting IC faculty recruitment and shaping cardiac catheterization laboratory optimization across the health system. Additionally, Dr. Cheng will continue to lead the division’s structural IC research efforts by increasing industry clinical trials and other grants to build a world-class clinical research portfolio.
Dr. Cheng completed dual fellowship training in structural IC and advanced heart disease at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. He is additionally board certified in echocardiography, computerized tomography and nuclear cardiology. Prior to joining UCLA, he was recruited to the University of California San Francisco, where he established a successful multidisciplinary cardiogenic shock program and a successful clinical trials program and served as principal investigator (PI) or co-PI in over 20 trials. He is a proficient operator in valvular and structural interventions and tests novel heart failure devices. He is active nationally as a speaker at academic conferences and writer for consensus statement committees. We welcome Dr. Cheng to his new role and look forward to seeing his successes.
