Yanina Venegas Appointed Chief Administrative Officer of the Department of Medicine at UCLA

Yanina Venegas

We are pleased to announce that Yanina Venegas has been appointed chief administrative officer (CAO) for the UCLA Department of Medicine (DoM). Yanina assumes this role with over 27 years of administrative leadership. As CAO, she will oversee operations in education programs, research administration, academic personnel, procurement, strategic planning, facilities, compliance and controls, health and safety, and will represent the DoM among administrative peers in the DGSOM and UCLA Health.

For the past five years, Yanina has served as the interim executive director of DoM, while continuing her role as division administrator for the division of hematology-oncology.

She served as division administrator for hematology-oncology for 18 years where she had an integral role in in the growth of inpatient care and clinical research. During this period of expansion, Yanina established the divisional infrastructure needed for the UCLA Oncology Outpatient Clinic to grow beyond Westwood and Santa Monica. She led efforts to restructure the division’s clinical research unit which has resulted in the division achieving the largest clinical research footprint at UCLA.

Yanina stepped into her role as interim executive director of the DoM when the department was experiencing a transition in leadership and a global pandemic. She was instrumental in providing guidance as the department transitioned to newly appointed Chair and Executive Medical Director Dr. E. Dale Abel. When faced with an unforeseen global pandemic, Yanina mobilized departmental personnel to either a remote environment or redeployed them to critical areas on site. Her leadership helped the department maintain operations and continue an upward trajectory in its missions.

As Yanina assumes this new role, she will be developing, implementing, and maintaining an administrative and financial infrastructure that effectively supports the department’s operations and academic missions. She looks forward to engaging with Dr. Abel and the executive leadership to implement the strategic plan that will continue to strengthen the department’s foundation and future growth. Please join us in congratulating Yanina as she begins this new leadership role.
