Anthony P. Heaney, MD, PhD Appointed Interim Chief, Division of Endocrinology
The department of medicine is pleased to announce that Anthony P. Heaney, MD, PhD has been appointed interim chief of the division of endocrinology, in the department of medicine at UCLA Health and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Heaney currently serves as the clinical chief in the division of endocrinology, director of the UCLA Pituitary & Neuroendocrine Tumor Program and a professor in residence at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He holds the Burnett Family Endowed Chair in Endocrinology. As clinical chief, Dr. Heaney has overseen the regional expansion of UCLA Health Endocrinology across our community practices and hospitals, which has contributed towards the division ranking as a top 5 program within US News & World Report for the past 4 years. In his new role, Dr. Heaney will continue to oversee the growth and preeminence of UCLA Health Endocrinology across our missions.
Dr. Heaney’s primary areas of clinical and research interest include the pathogenesis of pituitary tumors and exploiting novel molecular targets to develop innovative treatments for pituitary tumors, and other neuroendocrine tumors. His research spans laboratory, translational and clinical domains and he has been consistently funded, including funding from NIH, foundation, industry and philanthropy. He is a Fulbright scholar, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (UK), and member of several professional organizations, including the Endocrine Society, the Pituitary Society and the Society of Endocrinology. He is also a former president of the International Pituitary Society.
Dr. Heaney previously served as associate editor for the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Cancer Research, and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Dr. Heaney has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed publications that include the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Nature Medicine, Clinical Endocrinology, and Pituitary, and contributed book chapters for Baillieres Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Oxford Textbook of Endocrinology and Endocrine Updates.
Dr. Heaney is a graduate of Queen’s University of Belfast in Ireland where he received his medical degree (MB, ChB, BAO) and doctorate degree (PhD). Dr. Heaney completed an internship in internal medicine and surgery at Mater Infirmorum Hospital in Belfast, residency and a research fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, and was appointed Honorary lecturer in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the University of Manchester. He undertook basic and translational research in molecular endocrinology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles from 1997, where he joined faculty as associate professor in residence in 2000, establishing a premier neuroendocrine tumor center. Since 2006, U.S. News & World Reports has recognized Dr. Heaney’s outstanding clinical skills by acknowledging him as a Best Doctor.
