Michael Ong, MD, PhD Appointed Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development at VA Greater Los Angeles
The department of medicine is pleased to share that Michael One, MD, PhD has been appointed associate chief of staff for research and development (ACOS/R) at the VA Greater Los Angeles (GLA) Healthcare System. The appointment is effective September 11, 2022.
Dr. Ong has been at UCLA since 2005 and is a professor in residence of medicine, and health policy and management, at UCLA. He has been the VA GLA hospitalist chief since 2018. He completed his medical degree at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, as part of their Medical Scientist Training Program, and earned his PhD in health services and policy analysis at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Ong joined the University of California, San Francisco for his internal medicine/primary care residency and completed the VA Ambulatory Care Fellowship at Stanford University and at VA Palo Alto Health Care.
His research interests focus on improving the delivery of appropriate and efficient health care including hospital-based care, use of technology, mental health and tobacco control. He has authored over 160 articles and chapters and has been funded as a principal investigator by the VA, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Dr. Ong is chair of the California Tobacco Education and Research Oversight Committee, chair of the University of California Academic Senate Health Care Task Force, co-director of the Stakeholder-Partnered Implementation Research and Innovation Translation (SPIRIT) Learning Health System Center of Excellence in LHS Researcher Training which is funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute. He co-leads the BreatheWell and ResearchWell Pods for the Semel Healthy Campus Initiative Center at UCLA. He also serves on the editorial boards of Health Services Research and Digital Biomarkers and is an associate editor of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
