Blood Donation is Safe

“When a student comes in their first time, we hope to encourage them to be a lifelong blood donor,” says Delia Tejano, a registered nurse at the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center at Ackerman Union, which is celebrating its 10th Anniversary. “There are a lot of myths around, like being afraid of the needles or that if you give blood you’ll faint. We give students the knowledge that it’s safe. If you weigh 110 pounds or more, we can safely take a pint of blood or unit of platelets and you’ll still have enough for yourself. We really gear everything towards the students and UCLA staff.”
