Dear Colleagues,

Happy Nurses' Week and Year of the Nurse and Midwife everyone!

Thank you for all you have done this year for our patients, UCLA Health and each other. While the year has been full of milestones, accomplishments, and challenges, nothing has really compared to the past 7 weeks. COVID-19 has helped us realize the importance of kindness, compassion and what it means to be brave. We have confronted the realities of what it means to be a nurse and have shown the courage to love humanity and care for all who are in need.

I think Ms. Nightingale would be very proud to see how far the nursing profession has come and also, how many of her teachings have lived on in our practice. I'm sure she would find many similarities between her work in the Crimea and ours with COVID-19 here at UCLA Health. For, in both instances, there were no cures, only suffering to be alleviated and acts of kindness to be delivered. Seeing many of you in action these past weeks is a haunting reminder that good health can be fleeting and with no immediate cure, we can only care.

Each of you have embraced the challenges of caring for our patients with unabashed dedication and, yes, love of humankind. Your motivation comes from your love of nursing and through your actions and words, nursing care becomes your patients' experience. You've shown us that caring and kindness count and that the courage to care abounds.

There are no words to thank you for the work you do each day.

With my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation,

Karen
