“One of the foundations of nursing at UCLA Health is relationship-based care,” says Toyin Lawal, director of ambulatory care nursing at UCLA. “Ambulatory care is caring for patients outside the hospital, so the delivery of care is very different in the sense that the patient comes in, they get their treatment, and they return back home to the community. What we do is keep the patient inside the community, but outside the hospital, so there is value in quality care. We also make sure the quality of care is equitable, so if I go into a community practice in Thousand Oaks, I receive the same quality of care because it’s in the UCLA Health network. The patients keep on coming because of the way that we deliver our care, and we really try to make a difference in the life of our patients.”
