Couple Caring in Child Life

“If you have one good connection that lasts five minutes in a shift, it’s worth the three hours and rest of the week until you can come back again,” says Andrew Hersh, a child life volunteer at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. Also a volunteer, Syd Hersh adds, “We volunteer on the same day. I have the afternoons and Andrew has the mornings. Volunteering brings me so much joy, but it’s not about bringing joy to me. It’s about seeing a child smile and taking their mind off everything. The kid’s and their families are so inspiring. This is so different than anything else you can do in your day. You really can help make a difference directly in a kid’s life or in their families life.”
