Growing A Backbone

By allhearrtracing

When I was 19 I was diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis, I had gone from being in pain chronically since I was 16 unaware of my symptoms to constant agony for every hour of every day for years. Physical therapy did nothing, acupressure and acupuncture barely made a dent, then when I was left with no other option I resorted to a spinal steroid which left gave me a month of relief until I was unable to walk. Finally my orthopedic Dr. Nick Shamie presented the option of surgery. When I left the hospital, it was the first time in three years I was able to walk and feel both of my legs, pain free. I cried because for the first time that night I recognized myself in the mirror and I knew that I could grow from the experience that was to come. Recovery was a long and arduous road but it gave me perspective on how to be a better person and how to live life to its fullest. I am now a UCLA graduate, a medical interpreter, and I run professionally. All this would not have been possible without Dr. Nick Shamie and his medical staff UCLA Santa Monica Orthopedic Hospital. Thank you.
